Dr. Liu Yi Lee

Senior Resident in Veterinary Ophthalmology

BSc, DVM, MANZCVS (Small Animal Medicine)

Liu grew up in Singapore and moved to Australia to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian. During her studies her interest in veterinary ophthalmology was sparked. After graduation from the University of Melbourne in 2016, she moved to Canberra to work at a busy small animal practice as well as the RSPCA ACT for 2 years.

She then completed a rotating internship at a specialist hospital in Sydney and worked as an emergency veterinarian.

You cannot share your life in a meaningful way with any animals such as a dog, cat, rabbit, bird, rat, pig, horse and so many more and not know that we are not the only sentient and sapient beings on the planet.

Dr. Maria Gerasimova

Resident in Veterinary Ophthalmology

BVSc (Hons 1), MANZCVS (Small Animal Medicine)

Maria has a russian background but was born and grew up initially in America, before moving to Australia with her family as a child. She always loved animals and it was to no ones surprise she went to study to become a vet right after school.

In her final year studying veterinary medicine she fell in love with ophthalmology. After a couple of years working in general practice on the central coast near Sydney, she went into referral practice to pursue her dream of specialising in ophthalmology.

When not talking about or looking at eyes, Maria enjoys a good hike out in the bush or a quiet night in with her partner (also a vet!) with good food, movies or games.

We don’t own the planet Earth, we belong to it. And we must share it with our wildlife.

Dr Tom Ulcoq

Resident in Veterinary Ophthalmology

BVSc, MANZCVS (Veterinary Practice (Small Animal))

Tom grew up in far north Queensland and graduated from James Cook University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 2015. Initially he spent 5 years in mixed general practice in central Queensland; working with a wide range of large and production animal species in addition to a regular small animal caseload. A further 2 years in Brisbane general practice followed, and Tom found himself increasingly interested in all things eyes. Tom spent some time with the local ophthalmology specialists in his home state and in 2019 completed an ophthalmology professional development course. In 2023 he decided to make the interstate move to take up an internship with Melbourne Eye Vet. Outside of work Tom enjoys soccer, beach volleyball and collecting music. He is also looking forward to sampling some of Melbourne’s local craft breweries.

Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms.

Dr Lizzy Davey

Intern in Veterinary Ophthalmology

BSc, BScVetBio, DVM, CVE Ophthalmology DE (studying)

After realising it was too late to become an astronaut (and that she hated studying law) Lizzy studied veterinary medicine in Adelaide. Ophthalmology became her passion during the final years of veterinary study. Watching dogs wake from cataract surgery and seeing their owners again cemented Lizzy’s desire to work in the field.

Lizzy works part time as a GP veterinarian in Melbourne’s Inner North and as an Intern at Melbourne Eye Vet. Her special interests include behaviour medicine, anaesthesia and analgesia, and of course ophthalmology. Lizzy is passionate about sharing what she learns in all areas of veterinary ophthalmology with anyone willing to listen.
