Remote Consultations

We provide a Remote Consultation Services to veterinarians across Australia.

The assessment fee is $150 (incl. GST) and will be invoiced to the referring clinic. Clinics may apply their own consultation and consumables fees in addition to the remote consultation fee to compensate for time and medical expenses.

Remote assessment is appropriate in many cases, particularly for conditions involving the eyelids, conjunctiva, and anterior segment. However, there are inherent limitations without an in-person examination. In cases involving vision loss (including cataracts) or neurological dysfunction, a definitive remote diagnosis may not always be possible, although we can generally provide meaningful clinical guidance.

Some patients may require referral-level surgery for optimal management and may not be suitable for treatment in-house. Where referral is not feasible, we will endeavour to recommend practical alternative management options.

Our standard turnaround time is within 7 working days. Urgent cases should be indicated on the referral form and will be triaged as a priority.

Clinical Image Guidelines

High-quality ocular images are essential for accurate remote assessment. Please refer to the example image provided on the right as a guide to the standard required.

Tips for obtaining diagnostic-quality photographs:

  • A smartphone camera is suitable when used with the flash enabled.

  • Use a macro setting or 2–3× magnification, depending on your device.

  • Ensure the camera is focused on the iris or eyelids so the image is sharp and well defined.

  • The eyelids should be gently opened, with the eye positioned directly facing the camera. Multiple attempts may be required.

  • Take photographs in a dimly lit room to reduce reflection artefact; cover windows where possible.

  • If the eye is painful, apply topical local anaesthetic beforehand to improve patient comfort and image quality.

  • If specific lesions are not clearly visible in a straight-on view, please provide additional angled images.

  • Include a photograph of the contralateral (unaffected) eye for comparison.

  • For lesions that are difficult to capture adequately, please provide a precise and detailed written description.
